Hipster Style

It began with a web site http://www.unhappyhipster.com/ where interior design photos from Dwell, NY Times and other publications are posted with funny captions.  I passed it along to friends and someone commented that in all actuality myself and my husband were hipsters!

It got me thinking: what exactly defines a hipster?

"Hipster is a slang term that first appeared in the 1940s, and was revived in the 1990s and 2000s often to describe types of young, recently-settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers with interests in non-mainstream fashion and culture, particularly alternative music, independent rock ..."- Wikipedia

Of course, Urban Dictionary says a Hipster:
"Listens to bands that you have never heard of. Has hairstyle that can only be described as "complicated." (Most likely achieved by a minimum of one week not washing it.) Probably tattooed. Maybe gay. Definitely cooler than you. ...Always denies being a hipster. Hates the word...... Has friends and/or self cut hair. Dyes it frequently (black, white-blonde, etc. and until scalp bleeds). Has a closet full of clothing but usually wears same three things OVER AND OVER (most likely very tight black pants, scarf, and ironic tee-shirt). Chips off nail polish artfully after $50 manicure. Sleeps with everyone and talks about it at great volume in crowded coffee shops. Addicted to coffee, cigarettes (Parliaments, Kamel Reds, Lucky Strikes, etc.), and possibly cocaine. Claims to be in a band. Rehearsals consist of choosing outfits for next show and drinking PBR....."
LOL - all I know is that I am seeing hipster fashion, home decor, accessories, art and more everywhere I look these days. Here are some of my faves:

Living in a Perfectly Imperfect World

Vogue has announced that this fall - imperfect is in.

Their Style Guide states, "Do you ever see a girl on the street- maybe she's a model, maybe she's just cool-and her hair, tucked behind an ear, in a loose ponytail, or falling out of a low bun, is just right?....That's the key to fall: Real Beauty. That's what we call perfectly imperfect."

Viktor & Rolf were way ahead of this trend with their gorgeous Summer/Spring 2010 line that featured layers of thin chiffon, cut and equipped with holes to create divine imperfections.

International Children's Book Day

I absolutely adore children's book illustrations. Many of my faves are framed and hanging in my art room to provide vibrant pops of color and inspiration.  April 2nd is International Children's Book Day and there are so many great pieces out there using books and their pages so I decided to share some of them with you in honor of this fun "holiday".

The Poky Little Puppy purse from Ruby Lime Designs just makes me smile: http://www.rubylimedesign.blogspot.com/

La Petite Mort on Etsy has immortalized my absolute favorite character Curious George in this adorable piece of jewelry.  I just want to know if it is yellow in honor of the Man in the Yellow Hat?

Do you remember those Little Miss and Mr. books including Little Miss Sunshine, Mister Fickler, Mister Happy and my favorite Little Miss Chatterbox (my childhood nickname)? Although this necklace is technically for kids I am ordering mine and sporting it as an homage to the little girl who used to get in trouble for talking in class.
